Why Your Website Isn't Bringing You Customers

Websites · 3 min read

A lot of business websites are built like a formality. Everyone said you need one, so you got one. It has a home page, an about page with your history, a services page with a list, and a contact form that might or might not send emails. It went live, someone shared it once, and it has been quiet ever since.

A website should be your best salesperson: awake at 2am, never tired and talking to people who already want what you sell. Here is why most aren't.

1. Visitors can't tell what you do in five seconds

People don't read websites; they scan them. If your first screen says "Welcome to our website" or "Excellence in everything we do", visitors leave. Your first screen should say what you do, for whom, and what to do next.

For Billion African, the website work was built around a simple rule: every section had to answer a question. What is this? Why does it matter? Who is it for? What should I trust? What should I do next?

2. It is written about you, not your customer

Long company histories and mission statements matter to you. Your customers care about their problem. Lead with their situation and how you solve it, then add your story as proof.

3. Nobody can find it

Search engine optimisation simply means helping Google understand what you do and where. Use the words customers actually search for, like "logo design Lusaka" or "event venue Zambia", in your page titles and headings. Give every service its own clear section. Keep your business details consistent on Google.

4. It is slow on a phone

Most visitors in Zambia arrive on a mobile phone, often on data. Heavy images and bloated themes make pages crawl. A site that takes ten seconds to load has lost most visitors by second four.

5. There is no clear next step

Every page should make the next action obvious: call, WhatsApp, book, request a quote. Make it one tap away.

6. It never changes

A website with an events page from 2021 tells visitors the business might have closed. Update it regularly, even if it is only your latest work.

Story first, then build

A good website starts with strategy and words, then design and development. At OSC we shape the story, structure and copy; our sister company Penda Digital builds the website and the systems behind it, as with Boltt's brand consulting and website. One brief, no handover gaps.

Your website should work as hard as you do. If it doesn't, the fix usually starts with the message, not the colours.
