Your Customer Is the Hero of Your Brand Story. Not You.
Storytelling · 3 min read
Think about the last film you loved. The hero had a problem. They met a guide who helped them. They faced a challenge, overcame it and came out changed. Now think about the last company advert you saw. "We are the leading provider of quality solutions since 2009."
One of those stories you remember. The other one you scrolled past.
Most brands cast themselves as the hero
It is natural. You are proud of your business. You want to talk about your history, your awards, your equipment, your team. But customers are busy being the hero of their own lives. When your marketing is all about you, they don't see themselves in it.
Make the customer the hero
The shift is simple and powerful. Your customer is the hero. They have a goal and a problem in the way. Your brand is the guide that helps them win. Your product or service is the tool.
Natural Kurls didn't build a story about salon chairs and products. It built Crown Culture, a story about women honouring natural African textures and feeling seen. The customer is the hero; the salon is where she is celebrated.
The simple structure
Who is your customer, and what do they want? What stands in their way, practically and emotionally? How do you help them through it? What does life look like after? When your website, posts and adverts follow that shape, people lean in.
Show the struggle honestly
Stories need tension. Don't be afraid to name the problem your customers face. Buumi's brand speaks to a real tension: people want to eat healthier without giving up food that feels like home. Naming that honestly is what makes the promise, local favourites made healthier, land.
Let your story be true
African businesses are full of extraordinary, true stories: founders who started with nothing, communities served for decades, ideas that only make sense here. You don't need to invent drama. You need to find the story already inside your business and tell it with your customer at the centre.
A quick exercise
Take your "About us" page and rewrite the first paragraph so it starts with your customer, not your company. Read both versions aloud. You will feel the difference immediately, and so will the people reading it.
That is the heart of everything OSC does: tell your unbelievable story, and make sure it is the customer's story too.
